Credit Card Payoff Calculator

    Credit Card Repayment Calculator NZ

New Zealand credit card interest rates typically sit between 20% and 22% p.a. — among the highest consumer borrowing costs in NZ, compounded monthly. At that rate, a $5,000 balance accrues around $87 in interest every month before your principal moves at all. This calculator shows exactly how long your repayment plan will take to clear the debt, and how much interest you'll hand to the bank along the way.

    How to use this calculator

Enter your current card balance, the interest rate from your statement (check the "Purchase rate" line), and the fixed monthly amount you plan to pay. Hit Calculate and you'll instantly see the payoff timeline and total cost. Try increasing your monthly repayment by even $50 — you'll be surprised how many months it cuts off.

    Why minimum payments are dangerous

Most NZ credit card minimum payments are around 2–3% of the outstanding balance, or $20, whichever is higher. Because the minimum shrinks as your balance shrinks, you're on a treadmill — paying mostly interest each month. A $5,000 balance at 20.99% with a 2% minimum payment takes over 30 years to clear and costs more than double in total. Minimum payments are the bank's preferred outcome, not yours.

How to pay off credit card debt faster in NZ

    • Fix your repayment amount. Don't let it shrink with your balance. Set a fixed automatic payment above the minimum.
    • Look for a balance transfer. Some NZ banks offer 0% balance transfer deals for 6–12 months. Read the revert rate carefully.
    • Use the avalanche method. If you have multiple debts, throw extra money at the highest-rate one first. Owly's strategy tool calculates this for you.
    • Stop using the card. It's hard to drain a bath with the tap running. Freeze new spending while you pay down the balance.
    • Check your rate. Call your bank and ask for a lower rate, especially if you have a good payment history. It works more often than people think.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the average credit card interest rate in NZ?

Most New Zealand credit cards charge between 20% and 22% per annum — the ANZ, ASB, BNZ, and Westpac standard rates all cluster around 20.95–21.95%. Low-rate cards (typically from the same banks) sit around 12–13%, and retail store cards can exceed 25%. This calculator defaults to 20.99%, a typical rate for the major NZ banks.

How long does it take to pay off a credit card on minimum payments in NZ?

Longer than you'd expect. On a $5,000 balance at 20.99%, paying the standard 2% minimum (around $100 initially) takes over 30 years to clear and costs more than $7,000 in interest — more than double the original balance. NZ card minimums are typically 2–3% of the outstanding balance or a flat $20, whichever is higher.

Is it better to pay off credit card debt or save in NZ?

Mathematically, paying off high-interest debt almost always wins. A NZ credit card at 20.99% costs you 20.99% guaranteed — whereas even the best NZ savings accounts currently pay around 4–5%. Paying off $1,000 of card debt is equivalent to earning a risk-free 20.99% return. The exception is if your employer matches KiwiSaver contributions — capture that first, then attack the debt.
